I hate this thing. It bugs. I hate to belay and be belayed with it. I think it is very annoying. The begginer can make so many mistakes with it, and so can an expert.

its great tons less worry about safety
unless you put the rope in the wrong way its great thought i love it tons

one bad thing it tends to lower the life of your rope because when it locks it penches the rope and after lots of use the outer shell of your rope tents to look furry

To those that complain about how complicated the Grigri seems, I say build a better mousetrap. Sure, it doesn't feed the rope for you (that's your job), but otherwise it's the best darn belay backup on the market. Furthermore, even if it is threaded backwards, it can still be used like a tube device because even without the cam engaged you will have enough bend in the rope for the resistance needed to stop a fall. In all honesty, it's true disadvantages aren't in it's belaying properties at all, but rather with the fact that you can't use it for a double rope rappel and the device must be removed from the belay biner to thread it or unthread it. Plus, it's the heaviest belay device on the market by a longshot. Ultimately, it's saftey features far outweigh anything against it, and all of the threading difficulties are easily overcome because it's so well labeled.

I have used the ATC, SBG, Variable Controller, BRD, Pyramid, Jaws, Super 8 and the Reverso.

The Petzl GRIGRI is a awesome device, given that the belayer knows how to use the stink'in thing correctly. When in use the belayer is still belaying but the auto-locking cam is a solid backup in those times when you least expect it.
