I must have a newer model Glencoe, as there is no rubber grip, just indentation/slots in the metal. great plunger, and I find the grips fine in gloves or mitts. The head is comfortable to hold, its light and the pick is great - went up 45 degree ice with nary a worry . It makes my buddy's CM look and feel dated. Self arrest got tested too. A fine tool, worth the extrs cash, I mean you're going to use it a lot so why save a feel bucks for a lesser tool.

I've used various generations of this axe for almost ten years — and have been very satisfied with its performance. it's not the lightest axe on the market and some would challenge the design because of the rubber handgrip (and so its ability to hinder plunging the axe as an anchor). but I have to admit that the lighter axes I've used along the way have felt skimpy, especially when I've really needed to use the axe to avoid an emergency. and while I have yet to try plunging the axe to the head, the quality of the grip (and the its insulation) more than make up for that.

the head design is very solid, and certainly achieves great purchase. it has a very clippable head and spike for anchoring... and it's designed in Scotland. like all good things.
