I was ready to try Lowa's line of plastic mountaineering boots after having excellent luck with their hiking boots, the Lowa Renegade GTX Mid. These boots fit my feet like they were custom made for me. Knowing that boot makers have their own proprietary "lasts" which is a form shaped like a human foot that they make a given shoe size from, I decided that if the hiking boots fit well, their plastic boots would too. I used the Civetta's right out of the box, no break in period, on a trip to Mt. Whitney via the Mountaineers route. This is a mixed route, rocks and dirt down low, snow & ice up high. Hauling a 65 lb pack, I was concerned about blisters but did not get a single blister or hot spot during the whole four day trip. Next I used them on Cotopaxi and Cayambe in Ecuador, they worked fine, no problems there either. I will say that it can be tough to get the liner in and out of the boot, with your feet in them, in very cold weather. The early morning of summit day at Mt. Whitney was like that. But once donned, I never experienced cold feet at all. I wear a size 10.5 street shoe but wear size 12 for climbing/hiking boots, no slippage detected while wearing 2 pairs of socks. Civettas are a great shoe for mixed mountaineering terrain. But if you plan to climb a lot and go higher, get the Civetta Extremes instead. It is better to pay an extra $55 now than to want them later but have to sell your Civetta's at a used price, and then have to cough up the difference to get the Civetta Extremes. That is the quandary I am in now if I one day decide to head off for McKinley or Aconcogua.

Great all-around boots. Ice, rock, glacier, and approach are comfortable and warm. Only problem I noticed was not enough flex on 13 mile entry to Katahdin, no blisters but barking shins.

For the price, you can't beat 'em.

Just tried Civettas on Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo. I found them to be a tad on the cold side, but my feet are cold no matter what so take it for what its worth. Also they liner laces in a way that allows the heelbox of the liner to slip away from my heel, although no blistering, or irritation resulted it is still annoying and makes you feel like your wearing an ill-fitting boot. I like the softer material used in the shell. It gave just the right ammount of flex. I think the boots are good overall, but need some more substantial and more anatomic liners.

These boots are very middle of the road. They work for steep ice(just), mountaineering (limited flex at ankle) and mixed(dont feel much). The laces and footbed are VERY cheap and the soles wear fast. BUT, the feet only got cold once on a belay and have gotten me there and back. Just watch the fit, if you have too much room in the toes, your ability on the steeps will suffer. If the are too tight you will be cold and possibly loose toes. They are made for a normal width foot, NOT a wide(mine). So watch that too.

Customer Service

The were clueless about how to resole the boot(or at least that person that day was).

Love these boots. Warm and not bulky! Good comfort on almost all terrain. My brother has the Lowa Civetta Extremes and my feet tend to stay just as warm and my liners seem to dry as fast or fast than the Extremes. Works wonderful for Mountaineering and Ice Climbing. There is some discomfort on long steep transverses. The laces are kind of cheap, replace these with something better. I would strongly recommend these boots.
