This is a great boot with good support for the money-probably due to the heigth of the boot and the stiff leather more than anything. At times it seems too stiff though-mainly when hiking fast downhill.(trying to get below treeline before an oncoming storm maybe) It is a very comfortable boot with a big pack, but if you are not doing anything but hiking it is probably too much boot for you. For the most of the time, I use other boots/shoes for flexibility or less weight.

Unfortunately I was quite disappointed with my Alpines. I have bean more than happy with every other pair of Vasque boots I have owned, but the Alpine and I just didn’t work well. Don’t get me wrong, It’s a great boot, and it did a great job, but I was about halfway through a month long mountaineering trip in the Tetons, when one side of my boot buckled right along the inside ankle. I talked to a cobbler (after climbing and hiking my feet to hamburger for the rest of the month) and showed him the boot, and he said that if the lacing system was configured a bit different I wouldn’t have had the painful problem. The buckling of the upper took away considerable support, let my heal slide up and down, scrapping the skin off on the shank, and dug into my ankle unmercifully. I will never wear these boots again, but other than that they did a great job. I'’ not really sure if the boots were defective, I have not had a chance to write the company yet. Sorry folks.

These boots are great, comfortable, light, and can take punishment. They have the lip on the toe to add crampons when needed. They are an all around great boot.

I own a pair of waterproof redwings which I love but they are not as comfortable on long hikes as the Vasque's.

I have had my Alpines for about 6 months. I have only used them for long hikes or approaches to alpine climbs along with descents. I found them to be relatively comfortable (shank and all), very sturdy for edging, and lots of ankle support. Their light weight is what appealed to me, compared to comparable mountaineering boots. I find my feet do not get as fatigued compared to heavier plastics. As far as vaue, I got them on closeout (last ones left, size ten) so they were a killer price.

I own a pair of scarpa leathers and a pair of asolo guides. They each have their place, the guides for steep snow/ice climbing, the scarpa's for easy trails. The Alpine's filled a definite niche for something in between.

I originally purchased these boots for a trip to Mt. Rainier. It was in the summer and they worked well for the approach and the climb. They get great traction in the snow. They have worked great with crampons on multiple occasions. I recently used them while snow camping and found them to be inadiquate for inactive use in snowy 0-10 degree weather. The only other problem I have had with these boots is when I hike at a very fast pace. Both of these problems aren't really the boots fault, just be aware of the limitations. Break in was about right for these type of boots. They are a year old and have seen quite a bit of use. They have retained all of their original support. The leather is still in great shape (I do treat them often). The soles are hardly worn and I wear them on concrete all the time. If they fit buy em.

I have owned another pair of Vasque boots. They were Clarion GTX and I wore the sole smooth with no leaks or break downs. I owned the old One Sport Moraines and found them to be similar in toughness and comfort. They required more break in and weren't compatible with crampons. I recently bought a pair of Scarpa Inferno plastic boots. I learned my lesson when it comes to January at 12,000ft. I'm looking foward to putting these through the paces even higher.

At first the boots were hard to break in, but once that period was over with the boots have been great. I've climbed the Continental Divide with them twice in very harsh terrain. The full length steel shank saved my feet from being twisted and hurt when I made a couple of slips into narrow cravases. I wear them a lot just because they are very comfortable and give a lot of support to my feet. I wouldn't imagine going out on any sort of expedition without them. They're amazing boots.

Customer Service

All the customer service that I have experienced has been helpful and good to work with when looking for the right kind of boot.

Great! Just spent several days in the Hoh Rain Forest and these boots saved me. First day, I put in 10 miles with a 45 pound pack and I weigh 230! No problems. The trail is sloppy from mud and it rained alot. Lot's of creek crossings. My feet stayed dry, dry, dry. They protected me from slippery rocks and roots. I was wearing a coolmax sock liner and smart wool hikers. My boots looked like jungle 'crocs but on the inside my dogs were as happy as beverlyhills poodles!

I take care of the leather with Vasques own cleaner and conditioner-water proofer.
