Paddler

I tested the 17' and 18' cargo canoes from Hoefgen Canoes and found both to be responsive and easy to maneuver when slightly heeled onto their sides, had smooth/rapid acceleration, and great glide performance. The functional seats and quality craftsmanship that goes into these canoes is hard to find these days at any price, and greatly appreciated by this paddler. I spent an hour with each playing in the 1'-2' waves on Lake Michigan--just across the street from store--and found that it tracked great, sliced through the small stuff and rose above the larger waves with ease. My wife was thrilled that it was also a dry ride, since she was riding in the bow seat and would be the one most likely to get wet. Now if I can just talk my wife into letting me have just one more boat I'll be placing my order immediately. Kevlar models are also available, and have the same quality construction, attention to details, and a gorgeous finish as do the FG models. Enjoy the ride--I did!

Wenonah Encounter Solo Canoe:

I have taken many extended trips with this canoe and always marvel at the speed and efficiency with which is performs--even with the heaviest of loads (300-350#lbs). My FG model has endured over 10,000 miles of travel and has held up very well.
The Encounter is 17' long and about 30" at the waterline, has a nice tumblehome center--to enable the paddler to easily reach the water--and significant flare added to the bow and stern. Tracking is excellent, initial stability is moderate, final stability is very good, and it responds nimbly to leaned/carved turns when slightly healed and a running bow cut followed by a draw stroke is used. I can't wait until I'm able to buy the kevlar version!--Scott Card--
