The Arcteryx Beta jacket (XCR Gortex)is one of the most amazing jackets I have ever owned. It is extremely light weight pascks very small. I have used the jacket climbing and it has allowed for a broad range of movement. The one area I have had some discomfort in is the underarms. Because I have broad shoulders the underarms are tighter. Otherwise this jacket has quality written all over it. This product is well worth the money.

I bought this for a lightweight 3-season jacket to go in the pack-- and stay there until needed. However, now I find myself looking for opportunities to use it. I've taken it day-hiking, trail-running, and I plan on using it aggressively next summer. The tailoring is amazing. The cuffs seal incredibly well using a countoured piece of stiffened nylon with matching countoured oopposing velcro--very tasteful besides functional. Not only that, the cuffs are cut inwards such that when sealed, the cuffs cover the outside of the wrist and cut away a little under the thumb-- giving greater use of the hand without sacrificing the seal around the wrist-- really cool. The movement in the arms and accross the chest is excellent although not as free as Theta LT (which would be a "10" in that regard). And the hood, although huge, manages to keep from being unruly by folding up a little in the back. The length is short, about hip-high, and yet, when worn with the Beta LT pants, does the job admirably keeping the wet out. The jacket is large enough to accomadate a thick fleece underneath or a down jacket. The really cool part of the shell fabric is the sheen it has and the feeling of lightweight-yet-durable. Arc'teryx is launching all of their line with the newer XCR 3-layer. I would make sure your purchase has this IF you're paying full-boat. If it does not and instead offers only "classic Gore-tex" I would look for it on sale. The shorter length does make the XCR fabric (with its 25% better breathablity than "classic goretex")less significant, I think. In any event, I look forward with confidence to giving it a try back-packing in the Summer.

Although the length is a bit short for use for biking (your butt is exposed) it's a perfect jacket for lightweight conscience backpackers and outdoor enthusiast alike. I love the attention to detail from the pit zips and the large fleece line laminated hood and the radcal new colours such as stone, molten, or shadow.

On the field the jacket's 3ply Gore-Tex really shines! I have used it from light drizzles to torrential downpours, which we get plent of here in the Wet er, I mean West-Coast. The only downside to the jacket is that it feels a bit stiff and can be a bit noisy when moving around.

Final comment: although the jacket's price comes at a premium, that old adage rings true, you get what you pay for.

Customer Service
