Marmot Genesis Shell Jackets

Marmot Genesis Shell Jackets

DESCRIPTION

The Marmot Men's Genesis Jacket is a completely waterproof softshell that can take on weather that sends other softshells to the bottom of your pack. This ability comes from Techtonic Bonded seams, which create a waterproof seal where other softshells are defenseless. Pull on the roll-up ERG hood and you're ready for the worst weather. Not only is the Genesis completely waterproof, it also has the incredible breathability, mobility, and comfort that make softshells great thanks to the Tropo fabric.

the outstanding thing about this softshell is its waterproofness. most softshells arent waterproof but this is better than my event or goretax jackets which become wetted and damp on the inside of the membrain if as in 90% of the time there is not a fresh coat of nikwax or similar on them. from what i userstand the marmot membrane is between the outer shell surface and the inner microfleece lining. ive had it for about 3 months and in persistant hard rain most weeks and its pretty much impervious and i havent noticed a lack of breathability. it summer here and i do get too warm during cycling over a few miles but in sure in the other 3 months itll be fine. the pitzips are good (this being the only seam that is stiched)and not something that is often included in a softshell. zips seem water tight so far but have yet to test on a long walk in the rain. zips have a plastic laminated on top (not a flap) which prevents leakage, i was told the last of zipper garages at the top stopped this getting a waterproof product description. i like the fit, length is belt height which is good for movement, big enought to get a light jumper underneath. im 6ft 1 and slight longer than average arms, 43inch chest and fit the large perfectly. it doesnt stretch like most softshells but has more give and flex than membrane outershells. the hood is perhaps the most annoying feature, its too big as was designed for a helmet, has a front flap which is useless as it has no rigidity but can be flipped back. when not rolled up it tends to drag the jacket off your shoulders when unzipped. its difficult to find how it rolls up but you have to use the hanging loop , when rolled up its about 2 inces tall which feels a bit big behind the neck but i guess would provide good protection in colder weather. the hood adjusters also need 2 hands which i find annoying and theres no cord across the top of the head to help it move when you turn your head. finally the suface texture of the jacket is unique, almost feels like a soft plastic and not crinkley at all.
overall i really like this jacket and its better than my goretex and event jackets for waterproofness which i no longer use anymore. its form fitting (for athletic people) and stylish, people have complimented it. wish the hood was better but have no regrets about buying this, its better than my much more expensive shells.
