Piece of Crap!, I own a ton of marmot products, outside of a pair of crappy gloves and this jacket, everthing else is great, i believe Marmot lost it's way a few years back, awful colors ,gimmicky design, sketchy quality, uneven warranty backup, used to be they would replace a warranty issue without question, now they give you excuses and a 1/2 price credit, i would NEVER buy or reccommend this jacket again, it's not the same company as before.

My jacket is the 2005 Precip (not Precip Plus). For the 1st 3 months it was great, water beaded off the arms like a waxed luxury car. That did not last. The fabric soaks through and you will get wet. Fit, design, weight, packability, hood, pockets are all excellent, but it is NOT WATERPROOF!!

Today, went for three hour hike in thunderstorm on Sierra Blanca peak near Ruidoso NM. Heavy hail and rain. The only thing that saved me was my new Ibex Shaq wool jacket under the shell. After getting down to the car, I pulled the soaked PreCip off, and was surprised to find the outer surface of the Ibex 100% dry. Puzzling.

Customer Service

They are polite but non-committal. They suggest using NicWax treatment and periodic fluffing in a dryer.

Similar Products Used:

Various 3-ply GorTex. That stuff also is NOT waterproof!. Sadly, I don't think that ManKind has solved the problem of fully breathable, 100% waterproof fabric. For now, I'm relying on wool underneath the shell - keeps you warm even if wet.

lets keep in mind people that this thing lists at under 100 bucks. Thats should be a warning that its not to be trusted on backpacking trips or anywhere where you need
real performance. A good shell should cost sometimes well over 200 bucks. Marmots not going to give stuff away. That having been said, you're right this shell is s piece of junk that does soak through almost instantly. Marmot made quite a reputation on this shell in some Backpacker reviews years ago and have obviously decided to screw the customer and live on reputation alone.

I purchased one of these jackets in spring 2004 and had it for about 1 year before I started noticing that rain would soak through the arms. I know that it wasn't condensation, as I tested it in the shower, doing my best to simulate a normal, brief rain shower. An REI sales rep. convinced me to just exchange it for a new one. However, the new jacket has the same arm-leaking problems, and it leaks around the upper back as well. The old jacket was crammed/wadded into various suitcases and backpacks, and I thought maybe the coating had warn off. However, I've taken exceptional care with the new jacket, and it leaks even more.

Customer Service

Haven't tried Marmot's customer service yet. Not sure I will-might just deal with REI again.

These negative reviews sound similar. When the jacket was new, I was in a rain for several hours and my arms were soaked. You could clearly see where the water had soaked through in spots, mostly on the arms but also all over the jacket body. Now the white liner material is peeling off, making an otherwise still serviceable jacket look bad.

This is the second precip jacket I have owned. I owned the first one less than one year, and it leaked considerably during a 30 min. rain. Returned it to Marmot, they sent it back with a product to wash it in (to recondition the coating), which I did. Still leaked. Returned again and this time received a new replacement, which LEAKS! I have another Marmot product, which is superb - Sawtooth down bag, but this product does not measure up. When a manufacturer says its product is "waterproof", it should be waterproof!

Customer Service

OK. See review. They did replace my first leaky jacket, but with another leaky jacket.

I was very surprised to read "Scooter's" review on this shell. I too, put many miles on my origional precip jacket and was very satified with its performance. But time took its toll on its dwr, so after many water-proofing treatments, with limited success, I purchased the newer model. I find that the new model out-preformed the old jacket in both light rain and heavy, soaking downpours. I am, quite frankly, surprised by all the negitive reviews. This is not the best product available, however, but for the price it does everything that it was designed to do. My Patagonia "rain shadow jacket" ($160.00) does out-perform my precip, by for alot more money. Perhaps a good wicking long-sleeve base layer would solve the problem. My girl friends "Red Ledge" rain gear does not perform as well as my precip. But again, look at the price.

I've now owned two sets of Precip Jackets/Pants. The first, I used on a 2,600 mile thru-hike of the Pacific Crest trail, and performed to my satisfaction.

I recently bought a new set, and used it on a 480 mile thru hike of the Colorado Trail. I noticed when I purchased the jacket that it looked like Marmot had updated the previuos liner material. I was excited, cause while the previous material had performed well, I trusted Marmot to make things better.

Boy, was I wrong. On day 6 of the trip, we got stuck in a a strong downpour. The rain kept switching between hail and rain, so the water was quite cold. I was happy at first, thinking, "No Problem, I have this great rain gear."

I was soon wet and miserable, but worse, I was getting chilled fast from the COLD water that was penetrating my supposedly waterproof gear. It was not sweat, as I was standing still at the time and had been eating lunch for 30 minutes previously. My hiking partner was wearing the same gear and commented on the same problem. Soon, I noticed her lips turning blueish and her teeth chattering wildly. We had to start hiking at a high speed thru the downpour to stave off the onset of hypothermia.

We were stuck with this gear for the rest of the trip - a trip where it rained every day. The gear leaked often, only keeping us dry in the lightest of rains.

I would strongly discourage anyone from purchasing Precip gear for anything but the lightest of uses.

Customer Service

Not yet contaced. Will be shortly.

Just bought the Precip jacket after considering several shell options. The fit and features are great as is the packability and weight, since we are now doing more backpacking. I was concerned about the comments on the jacket not being waterproof, so I stood in the shower for a time while wearing it. No water leaked through anywhere. This may not be the same as a day long hike in the rain, but it gave me the reassurance that it will likely work for its intended purpose.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT. This jacket is not waterproof as marketed. After any rain all my arms get completely wet. I would not even call it waterresistant.
It is just a very expensice windbreaker. Any 10$ rainjacket from WalMart performs much better.

Customer Service

TERRIBLE! I complained to Marmot about the jacket and they suggested to send it to them for inspaction, that I did. They found 2 pinholes and refused to honor the warranty. I will NEVER buy any Marmot products again
