Mountain Hardwear Aurora Parka Shell Jackets

Mountain Hardwear Aurora Parka Shell Jackets

DESCRIPTION

If you envy the animals who run about in all manner of weather, baggage free, the Aurora Parka is for you. Ideal for the backcountry athlete who wants to travel light and doesn't have space to spare, the Aurora Parka is the lightest, most compressible, waterproof/breathable, full-coverage shell we make. Gore's revolutionary, new PacLite fabric does away with a traditional hanging or laminated liner resulting in impressive weight and bulk savings and improved breathability. Features are weight conscious: the waterproof Simplex pit zips are the lightest on the market, one-hand drawcords have new lightweight cordlocks, and mesh-backed chest pockets. For maximum ventilation you can open the generous pit zips and the two-way front zip, and secure the chest pockets open with Velcro tabs.

This shell is the essence of simplicity in design -- no frills or extra bells and whistles. It seems to be cut a little trimmer than other MH shells, but layering has not been a problem. At first, I wondered if I would be comfortable wearing it, due to the ruuber-type "nubs" along the inside of the parka. They have not proven to be a problem. Unlike the other reviewer, I do not think that "breathability" is that great, for this, or any other Gore-Tex product. I have felt clammy (even with pit zips and front pockets open) hiking around the seashore in 65 degree weather. In other words, there are more comfortable shells around until you need the rain protection. Waterproofness has not been a problem, although I have never worn the jacket day in and day out in the rain. That would be the real test for this kind of shell. The packability of the parka is good. The light weight coupled with reasonably durable fabric was the reason I purchased the parka. My value rating is based on the price I paid. I give it four stars overall, although I am not in love with the parka; it's just that it fits and performs better than a lot of others.

Customer Service

I've used MH customer service once for a rip in a pair of Ethereal pants. They fixed it promptly, but at a cost of $35. I thought the rip was my fault, so I can't begrudge MH the repair cost.

It was a delight to wear this parker when the temp.always hang around 85+ with humidity averaging 85% at this side of the Pacific; for tha fact it vents through the lengthy pitzips plus mesh-backed front pockets with an extra pad of hook & loop to keep the storm flaps open.
Highly recommend for warm/tropical usage.
I had just started using the Mitril parka from the same maker with GTX-XCR, for the past few days, but the verdict stays.
As for weather proofing, there is no complain.
