Got this jacket on a steal from REI at $195. For that price, this jacket is an excellent value. I bought the XL, and it is huge. I am 5''11 185lbs and i could probably get away with a medium or large. My only problems with the coat are the thin material on non abrasion prone areas and the lack of waterproof zippers (which they fixed in the newer model. The thin material is probably used to conserve weight, but I''d rather have a little tougher material as in Arc''Teryx jackets. Great jacket, don''t get yellow for color, it stains easily.

I have always been into the right company for the right thing SD for bags and tents, Arc’T for shells and specialty stuff, and Patagonia for all the others but the Quantum is where I brake ranks… This thing is the bomb! It is not as sexy as the Alfa (Arc) but it will put it to shame when the wind starts blowing the temp drops south of anything you will see in the lower 48 and you are working hard. They have really thought about this jacket. SD started the Core vent move and I thought it was stupid – put the thing on or take it off just make up your mind. Then they got some sense and moved them out form under the pack straps and did some actual research to back the idea and now they really work(look at the free fall to see how far it can go). Nothing under your armpit to rub, nothing under the pack strap to add weight not function, no crazy zippers that you can’t reach; however, you will need to do a little aftermarket work to bring out the full potential of the coat as the zipper pulls seem to come off as you cut the price tag off. It is a little heavy and a little bulky but so are –40 degree bags and I don’t here anyone complaining when they are warm at night. If you want the best get it, if you want something else there is always another company.

I've been very pleased with this jacket, it is very well made and has all kinds of features you don't find on other jackets in the same price range. Some of the features I like best are all the pockets, you have 2 napoleon pockets in the front, and inside pocket and an inside sunglass pocket. The snow skirt also is nice in powdery conditions. I wouldn't pay full retail for it, but I rarely pay retail for anything. If I had it to do again I would have got a pac lite jacket with less features that weighs less and takes up less space because it's not that often that you really need a Gore-Tex shell and when you're not using it, it just weighs you down and takes up space.

This review is for the Genesis G3 Parka.

Thoroughly dissapointed with this jacket. Sierra Designs literature claims this 3-ply material is just as good as GoreTex - definetly not. First time I wore it there was a light drizzle/mist coming down. Within an hour the fabric was soaked (especially on the arms) and I was getting wet. I consoled myself with the thought that at least I could use it in the winter. Unfortunately the jacket isn't even windproof. Took it up to Hurricane ridge in the Olympics where the wind was blowing 20 - 30 mph and could feel the wind coming through.

The workmanship and design of the jacket are fine, just the material and advertising are way off.

I have the G2 not the Quantum.
Bought at EMS in post Xmas clearance for $100. I bought mainly for features, hood visor and adjustments, I liked core vent better than pit zip. Pocket number and arrangement.

After using for a Winter mountaineering trip and a really wet canoe weekend I liked it enough to get the same model for my son as his Xmas present. I waited and watched REI-Outlet for it to go on special.

Customer Service

EMS has a great reputation and is local, but I have never had to need Cust service.

REI-Outlet has taken back and refunded without question (Boots wrong size)

I got mine from rei-outlet.com for 126.00.Now they are up to 199. I'm sure the price will come back down, just keep your eye on it. You just can't beat that price for this type of parka.

This jacket may very well be one of the top 3 shell jackets available today! It has definitely been designed with every feature and function possible. Only 1 thing I would like to see on it, and the newer parkas may have them; is the fleece lining near the neck/chin area to cushion the abrasive fabric. Other than that.. IT'S PERFECT!!
