I bought the Atlas 1044 snowshoes from REI during the winter of '01 - '02 and I am SO-O-O glad I purchased this particular model. This truly is the ultimate "go anywhere" snowshoe. Being a big fellow, I needed the 36" shoe (this year the model is called "1036," not "1044") so I checked on a number of reviews and comparable models. I settled on the Atlas 1044s, bought 'em, and promptly went up to the Central Cascades right after several days of a major powder dump. These babies have MAJOR flotation! I mean, I went over the deepest drifts I could find, kick-stepped up steep slopes, rounded steep traverses and these snowshoes felt incredibly stable and solid on my boots. The cleats are fabulous if it gets icy and the overall design is RUGGED! OK, they may be overkill if all you do is gentle flatlands, but I want 'shoes that can do it ... and these DO!
