The Redtails are a fun snowshoe--quick, light, and easy to use. I weigh 165 ibs and use these as my "trail" shoes for snowshoeing at our local cross country ski area. These shoes are not ideal for people over 160 ibs in deep snow. I use the Black Hawks for deep snow travel. The snowshoe has clean lines and the hinge action (returning to the foot) is a great feature of all Redfeather snowshoes. The bindings, compared to my Black Hawks, are not as easy to use, but stay on better. Ideal for sneakers and small hiking boots--my Asolo 520's did not fit the small binding. I do not like the new ratchet binding the 2000 Redtails have and I do not like the new line of snowshoes because they all have ratchet bindings (which can get jammed with snow or break in extreme cold) which are heavier than the earlier heal-strap counterparts. These shoes are for a nice run or walk. They are really fun. Ideal for those either under 160 Ibs for general use, or for trail running/walking for those under 225 Ibs. These are for recreation, not mountaineering.

Like the Black Hawks also made by 'feather, these shoes are dependable and versatile. Two downsides include wear on the decking edges and the fact that the nice paint job chips off when you hit those not so nice objects found in shallow eastern snow (i.e. rocks, stumps, etc).

I have used these extensively for two years now. I have been very happy with them. My usage is generally short trips for a quiet workout. They jog easily and walk super. Deep snow performance could be better but buy the Blackhawks. I also have the shoe covers. They make the jogs much more fun because they allow the use of my standard trail runners while keeping my feet dry and warm.
