Patagonia Expedition Weight Fleece Capilene Wallace Beery First Layer Tops

Patagonia Expedition Weight Fleece Capilene Wallace Beery First Layer Tops

DESCRIPTION

This hard-working, moisture-wicking insulation is essential to cold-weather technical layering systems. As underwear, it is particularly suited for the conditions of alpine mountaineering and winter watersports. As outerwear, it is perfect for cool-weather hiking and climbing.

I love the Wallace Berry type with buttons! Great for ventilation, layering, wearing during sports, or as a normal shirt. Very comfortable.
But, I used to really love the old unisex Expedition weight fabric from 1988 or so! It was tough and smooth on the outside and soft on the inside. The newer 1995 material got holes in it after 3 washings. Probably was just that particular shirt.
*Hair of all types adheres to this new fabric like crazy!

Bought during 1987-1989: Expedition weight underwear: W's leggings, Zip-T's, Wallace 3 button L/S : Excellent and Tough!!! Navy color and Bright blue my favorite colors for women styles.

But: 1995 Expedition Weight Underwear Zip-T fell apart within 3 washings! Sent back, got refund no problem.

1997 Midweight Capliene underwear: W's XL Zip-T's :Excellent. Colors so-so for women.

1995-2001 Silkweight tanks, Long sleeve Crews, excellent, durabable, but colors so-so for women. Excellent.

W's Baggies shorts: light, easy drying, durable, elastic used to loose it too soon on a pair bought back in 1990.

Bought Stretch Midweight Capliene underwear, and still have them 6 years later in great condition! I love them! Warm, stretchy, comfortable to wear all the time, and durable!
But they don't make Stretch Midweight anymore that I can find! Isn't that always what happens!

I have been buying Patagonia mens and womens products for 16 years, and have been happy with the merchandise overall.
But I do have big concerns! What upsets me most is the return policy and how they claim just send it back! I used to have no problem sending things back, say when the elastic from a pair of expedition weight underwear lost its zing in one winter or the elastic lost it in their Baggies shorts. They sent me a replacement back pronto or my money back. But recently, they won't take back things I buy. I bought about 8 silkweight capliene shirts in different colors. I only tried them on and didn't like some of the colors on me, so I washed them and returned them. They were in totally perfect condition! They then sent me back the shirts and said they would not refund my money. The next year, I bought a Patagonia R3 mens jacket and discovered a design problem with the pocket design, where the zipper caught on the inside pocket material, preventing the pocket from being unziped. I returned it and they wrote a nasty letter to me to say they prefer me not to do business with them anymore! Can you believe that?
The other complaint I have is that their womens sizes are too small! I need XL to even think about buying their tops! I end up buying unisex.

This is the best piece of winter clothing I have ever owned. Whether paddling, skiing, or just hanging out, these tops perform like magic. They wick moisture away from your skin and are soft and fuzzy. This is a piece of gear I'm never without!

Customer Service

they stand behind everything they make and will bend overbackwards to help you out.

This is the most versetile piece of clothing I own. It's great as a first layer on realy cold days. On warmer days it's all you need. I have two of them and wear them during all four seasons. My only recomendation is that if you plan to wear it as an outer layer for warmer days, buy one size up.

Customer Service

Patagonia has always been great about replacing clothing if a seam goes or whatever.

This is the best, most versatile piece of clothing I own. This stuff is soft, very warm considering it weighs about nothing and is the first piece I look for when it even looks like it may be cold outside. If I could I would wear it everyday. When skiing in December I wore this over a midweight long underwear top and under my Gore shell and I was warm when the temps were in the 0s and teens. I have yet to find anything that will replace this shirt-I went camping one time without it and missed it the whole trip.

The wallace beery style I believe is better than the zip-tee (I have both)because it is easier to layer a vest over without too much bulk around your neck. (something I cant stand)

Overall, you cant beat this top, and you will probably end up wearing it all the time-and buying more so that you wont wear the same color everyday.

Customer Service

I have had no experience with them but it sounds like they are pretty responsive.

Nothing I have tried compares to this top--it is lighter than any jacket but packs great warmth and compresses very well.

Two days backcountry skiing and snow test pit digging and climbing up hills (in Yukon)- great warmth even with stop and start activity. Warm enough to wear alone when skiing or climbing but dried quick enough to prevent chills when we stopped - and feels soooo cuddly! I am pleased.

Customer Service

I was lucky enough to get this item on sale 40% off.

I also own silk, wool/cotton mix (Stanfield) and bargain synthetic brands - silk takes longer to dry and feels clammy when wet. Wool is a little itchy, especially with pack straps. I am finding the bargain synthetic brands pill badly after only a couple of washings.

A very cozy top that can be used as a base layer or as insulation. Light enough to be versitile yet it would be very handy as a base layer if gets really cold. One of my favourite fleece tops to wear anytimes. As usual the quality from Patagonia is first rate as all seams are perfectly finished and the cut is excellent. I can tell I'll have this top for years to come.
