Mountain Hardwear Gore WindStopper Tech Jacket Fleece Tops

Mountain Hardwear Gore WindStopper Tech Jacket Fleece Tops

DESCRIPTION

Polyester reinforcements at the shoulders and neck resist pack-strap abrasion; along the arms they protect against the grind of rock and ice. Extra-long pit zips (backed by an inner flap) align with those in our shells for effective venting; the front zipper has a no-snag draft flap. Articulated elbows assure unrestricted freedom of movement. Two generous chest pockets and two zippered security pockets (one in, one out) provide convenient storage. Comfortable Power Stretch cuffs will not absorb moisture.

Strength:

Really liked how this jacket claimed to block the wind, most fleece jackets are useless in Wisconsin winters. Winter hit shortly after the jacket arrived, and this is the only jacket I've worn, even in single digit temperatures. Chino Hills Pro Landscapers

I love this fleece so much I own two, one black and one sapphire blue. All that rave about it's being windproof is true. It's my go to sweater which is why I have two of different colors that I alternate. When it's really cold I put a down jacket over it.

It's got great style and fit -- for a fit body, that is. I would notice right away that I've gained weight when it gets tight around the belly. It's really going to show and that's a sort of disincentive to lose that fat already.

It's pricey all right, but if you know where to look (like I do) you can get it for less than half the price it sells for at any outfitter shop.

Two complaints: One is that the sleeves are a bit short. If it were an inch longer or even half, it would be perfect.

Second, the pit zips should zip so that the slider is on the body of the jacket rather than under the arm. That way you don't have the longish piece of fabric attached to the pull tab dangling and looking funny whenever you raise your arm.

Buy this jacket, you won't regret it.

Just wanted to post an addendum to my first review after using this jacket nonstop for about 3 months. The color still rocks. Little disappointed with a little pilling right by the cuff on the inside. THe sleeves are a little uncomfortable on bare skin-but not too much. And a little bit of wear on the back bum area from my rucksack. But otherwise, sweetness itself. Love the pitzips, although they look like wings when unzipped. This fleece is a lot less warm than I expected, but its OK-I get to wear it more. All in all, it is excellent. Perfect for anything.

Customer Service

Mountain Hardwear is mediocre. If I've submitted one catalogue request I've submitted a hundred, w/o receiving one. But they did send me about 20 stickers for free. I put one on my graphing calculator.

I paid top dollar, so I expected a lot. I rec'd it. This jacket is truly amazing. The sapphire color is a beautiful deep blue. THe design is brilliant. Everything's already been said. It's true. I haven't been this happy w/ a purchase in a long time. This jacket deserves its kudos.

Customer Service

No experience w/ Mountain Hardwear, but REI is of course excellent.

I bought this jacket used on Ebay. It came to me in excellent condition. I wear this coat everywhere as it is so versatile. It blocks the wind, yet keeps me warm in 40 degree temps. And its light enough to wear in 60 degree temps. Its not as warm as a NF Denali when used as a mid-layer, but it kicks the NF Denali in the teeth as an outer layer. BUY this jacket!

I bought this jacket last week and by every indication it is a quality piece of gear. What everyone else here has said is true--it cut wind perfectly, was well-made, etc. BUT: I returned the coat. It just fit all goofy. I am a fairly average guy: 6' and 170 lbs. At first I got a large but I felt totally confined in the shoulders and upper arms, and the cuffs would pull part-way up my forearm if I reached for anything. So I returned it for an XL that felt great in the shoulders but it left about 8 inches of extra fabric around the midsection that served no purpose other than to look stupid. In short: if yer gonna buy this here piece of extra fancy equipment over the internet I *highly* recommend you get into a shop and try it on first. Other people have posted similar things in this forum so don't overlook this issue before plopping down 200 bucks. I believe in Mtn Hware, though....they give gear to enviro groups so more power to 'em. I'm sure I'll get another chance to support them sometime soon.

Buy this coat!! Throw away your shells! Wind proof and highly water resistant. Obviously not meant to replace a hard shell, but depending on what you do, this jacket is perfect 95% of the time. pit zips vent great, hand pockets are placed perfectly and its Mountan Hardwear, what more could you want. Insulates extremely well. If you need more insul, you're too high or too far north (or south) or not using it for what it was designed for. Feels like you're not wearing anything. Again, buy this coat. It may not be the only coat you need, but it will be your "go to" coat for just about everything.

PROS: windstopping ability of course, athletic rather than baggy fit, nice high draft-blocking collar, fleece-free clean inside that is easy to get in and out of. CONS: Not a great insulator, not very breathable, inflexible fabric with no articulated elbows or back flex panels constricts movements, chest pocket is hard to get stuff out of (should use a vertical rather than horizontal zipper). I've used this jacket for over a year now and this is my year-end review. I've enjoyed using it for the above reasons but if I wanted to find something that stops wind, has greater flexability, breathability and some snow shedding ability compared to the MHW Tech, I will probably replace it with the Arc'teryx Gamma MX jacket.

I got the new '03 Sapphire color. It is awesome looking. nice deep blue. This jacket performs flawlessly. I have worn it in were cold situation and not so cold situation and been perfectly comfortable. Was driving around when it was 40 degrees F outside with some wind and rolled down the windows to put the jacket to the test. Was going 45 MPH and felt NO wind. Then I moved indoors and it was a little warm just i just unzipped the HUGE pit zips and that cooled me down nicely. didnt have to bother taking off the jacket. Best piece of outdoor clothing that i have ever owned. Even though it is 200 bucks and some say it is too expensive, it is worth ever cent i had to pay. Definitely get one if you dont have one. would give it 6 stars if i could.
