Strength:

Stiff (great for the superpipe), F-A-S-T, very durable. Works great in conjunction with my Drake Limited bindings. Park, pipe, powder days, tree runs, mid-mountain/lower-mountain freeriding: this board handles well in these conditions.

Weakness:

Not meant for upper-mountain riding at big resorts like Squaw Valley or Mammoth Mountain..the transition radius is too short for it.

An all-around great board. I've had mine for 3 years now (2000 model) and its taken a lot of abuse. Great for the pipe, decent on the park, and decent for mid-mountain & lower-mountain riding as well as tree runs. The board is extremely fast due to its stiffness. It has a short transition radius, which is fine for anything but upper-mountain riding at huge resorts like Mammoth or Squaw. If you plan to do a lot of upper-mountain riding on steep chutes then its best to use a different board.

I rode terje's first pro model board for a few years after he changed to it from the burton air 5.1. That was by far the best board i've ridden even compared to the newer Ride Jeff Brushie from 99 which I own now. It was awesome for charging down the mountain, super responsive feel to it through the turns and awesome pop of the tail. Next time I have the cash I will definately be going to purchase the newer code to replace my ride brushie.

Strength:

1. It's lightweight 2. It's strong 3. It's FAST 4. It's easy to manuever 5. It has an awesome amount of POP! (POP - How the board's flex throws you out of a jump or an ollie. Usually the stiffer the board the better the pop.) If you want to launch, this is the board! If you are a beginner, don't let this scare you, I learned on my 98 balance, it is easy to learn on also.

Weakness:

Newer Burton Boards have a topcoat that is easy to chip and scratch. DOES NOT EFFECT RIDING AT ALL. They might have changed the topcoat in the newest models.

Hey, I am actually reviewing two boards .A 98 BALANCE 156 and an 02 Balance 157.5. The Burton Balance is the best board I have ever ridden! That's why I have owned two! They said it was for the pipe, this board is awesome almost anywhere. It is now called the Burton Code. I don't know how much it has changed, but I am tempted to get an 04 Code even though I still have my 02 Balance. I was a snowboarding instructor at Sugarloaf USA last year, and I used the 02 Balance for around 45 days. I love it, Burton was right on track with the Balance!

Strength:

This board is stiff, fast and holds the wall of the pipe like it's on rails. If Terje rides this board, you know it performs in the pipe. More impressive, though, is how well it carves during freeriding. Lightning quick from edge to edge, with a very predictable and smooth transition. Super-precise, but not twitchy. The stiffness makes it less suited to rails and jibbing, but it is super-stable on landings, and very spinnable in the air.

Weakness:

Gets a little twitchy at super-fast speeds, and sinks a bit in powder (duh, it's a pipe board). Also, bigger feet should consider the rush (2002), or a wide code (2003) because of the narrow waist.

Currently sold as the code, this board is the ultimate pipe weapon with excellent all-mountain performance.

Weakness:

None known of

Well, the balance is the best board i have ever used, i steped on one of my friends Gnu and that was way more flexible but i still think for a pipe board it's the best i could buy, besides the dragon i would never choose anything els just becuase its so smooth and responsive, never could ask for anything better, i have Drake Podium's on it and 32 lashed boots, i dont think i would ever ride anything els.
