Summary:
Welp, when I started looking for a new set of binoculars I did a lot of research and asked around.

My choices mainly were a nikon monarch, pentax DCF WP, Minolta activa wp, Minox, steiner. I compared probably 20 models ranging from $200 to $1000 and without spending over $1000 these were the best I viewed, or at least as good as the models costing much more. The only one I viewed that I would says is hands down a big step better is the swarovski EL 8x42's and for $1400 they better be. I did compare them to 3-4 in the $800-1000 range and didn't see anything that was a big step up in image quality or light gathering.

I compared them indoors and out, in good and poor light, and these were as good as models costing twice as much. They can be found online for the $330 range but expect them to be closer to $500 at a local sporting goods store. Among the 4 I looked at the pentax and the minolta were tied but I could get a much better price on the minolta, the minox was nice but did not fit my face well, the nikon was priced quite a bit less and was not quite to the quality of the others.

I use them mostly for hunting and shooting 3D archery, so it's easy to play with 20-30 different binoculars on the range during a league night to compare. Again everyone was very impressed even guys that own the top end zeiss and swarovski. For the price range you might find something as good, but nothing I found was better in anywhere near the same price.
