I love my super comfy Lowe Alpine Athena daypack!
It has plenty of space for extra gear when on a dayhike, which is accessible from both the top and a zipper down the front of the pack. It also compresses down when you aren't carrying much. But Athena's best feature is its wonderfully adjustable fit system, particularly the hip belt. It is designed so that the wearer can easily adjust the hip belt to fit the curvature of her hips. The shoulder straps are designed to prevent smooshing, yet they aren't too narrow.
If you think Athena's price is a bit steep for a day pack, reconsider. A few hours into my first hike with it, I decided it was worth every penny I paid. In fit and comfort, I definitely got what I paid for. Customer Service:
