at REI Summary: After nearly burning off Pine Mountain campsite in the Guadalupe Mountains, I began looking for a canister stove. I bought what was then the Peak 1 Xpedition after seeing its review in an outdoor magazine, and have since used it from sea level to 13,000 feet; from warm, sultry nights to near-zero mornings; and not only have nothing but respect for its capabilities, but liked it enough to buy the one-burner Xpert for those solo trips.
The proprietary canisters only seem more expensive than conventional canisters, since a large (300 gram) canister can last two or three long weekend trips, with this the only stove for four people.
The re-cycliable nature of the canisters makes me feel better about the potential waste of a canister stove.
Controls are easy to use even with gloved hands, but the efficiency that makes the cartridges last so long, means that a turn of the knob has a lead time before the flame adjusts--so boiling or nearly extinguished has a few seconds of uncertainty before the flame reenforces that act.
Although reviewers say the very end of their canisters burn the same as the very beginning, I've not experienced quite the uniformity they seem to have, though it's still far better than my experience with Lindle-valved variants.
Truly an excellent stove series, and this two-burner is so effecient, we frequently leave the big Coleman stove at home on car camping trips, and use only this one--overwhelmed only if a big pot and big skillet are needed at the same time. Customer Service: After a few trips, I wanted to take it apart at home--in a safe environment--to find out what I might encounter in the field. I couldn't get it apart, contacted Coleman who asked we send it to them, which I did. The called a few days later and asked if it were okay if they kept our stove and sent us a brand new one with upgrades the new stoves had. Two days later, the box arrived and we've been using this stove without problem for over six years. My experience is that they're good people at Coleman, with previous experience and one since then, that show they care about customer satisfaction more than appearing perfect or faultless.
