This pack is great. Comfortable, roomy, and lightweight. I suggest this pack to anyone from beginner to pro. It stands up well to the abuses of the trail. Also the best value at around $109. Get This Pack!

I have owned a similar jansport backpack which I bought in 1993. I have backpacked with it for 8 years now and am very pleased. There are lots of pockets, rides well on hips, no problems with zippers, and has held up expcept for on split at a zipper. This happens in CO and porbably happened going through rough forest areas.

I like having all the compartments and little zipped areas for maps etc. I have carried between 50 to 70 pounds with no backpack problems.

Customer Service

I had to send it back in for a slipt zipper and it cost me $20, but I received it back in just 3 weeks. The repair was made in 1996 and has held up well.

I had a buckle break which Jansport replaced for free.

This was my first external backpack for my first backpacking trip. It is an ok pack for beginner's, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. One, with a 40 lb. load which isn't that much, the adjustment screws began to knife into my shoulder blades, making comfort harder to come by. It has ample room, and plenty of storage spots and places to tie stuff which are a plus. The load control is also decent, but not the best, for it has no compression straps on the side. But, after having this pack and using it on 3 trips to Colorado, I'm am in dire need of a pack that is comfortable. i think my next one will be internal. For, beginner's though, I would recommend a different pack, like the kelty trekker 4300. My brother bought this one at the same time I bought the rainer, and his is much more comfortable with all the good things this one has.

I have already submitted a review for this pack, but I have gone on a couple more extended trips since then. This past Labor Day, I went on a 20 mile hike in Big South Fork, KY. It had been a little wet and the nylon of the hip belt had gotten slippery. I had paused to retighten, which broke the guides on the inner part of the female side of the buckle. I though that I was going to be screwed without a hipbelt, but even though the back half was fractured, the buckle still function. I called Jansport and they promptly sent me a replacement free of charge, no questions asked. However, the break still concerns me and I will adjust it much more gingerly from now on. Also, I made a great improvement by sewing two utility straps into loops in the top of the pack. This is a feature in my friends Kelty so I mimicked it and now I can secure heavy items in the top where they belong with out them filtering down to the bottom of the cavernous compartment. A real cheap and simple improvement!

Customer Service

As mentioned above, prompt FREE replacement...Kudos Jansport

I was greatly influenced by the reviews for this pack. I am very happy that the reviewers were right on. This is a very nice pack. I only have one complaint, I can't get my griddle into the pack. The griddle is slightly larger than the length of the upper compartment. The ability to 'fit' the pack to the load and the body is better than any other pack I have owned. I have loaded the pack from 30 to nearly 60 lbs and it doesn't seem to make much difference to the performance.

I've only used this pack twice now to go through the Smokey Mtns. I would not want to use for a week long hike or more. Great layout of pockets. Felt comfortable throughout the whole day with minor adjustment.

I like the pack. I've used it for a year or two and its held out well. My only complaint is the plastic shoulder belt ends. They squeak and creak after a little hiking also the interchangable compartment does good.secret: instead of buying the hydration pack buy a platopus bladder and stick it in the original pocket works the same way!!
good pack for short hikes like maybe 25 miles but uncomfertable after that. Overall a greatly built pack!

This is a great buy! It is easily adjustable, comfortable, and doesn't make alot of noise when you walk. I bought mine at the sports authority, so if you are looking for a great 'pack without emptying your wallet, check this one out.

Not bad for the price, if your not going over 20 miles, if you are into extended trips I suggest a different pack.

I have a Jansport model I bought in '94 that is very similar to this one--I assume it's the same model. I'm quite pleased with it for a few reasons. The side zippers make it very easy to get things out of the pack. No digging around under piles of clothes to fish for something in the middle or on the bottom of the pack. The construction is excellent. I've repeated stuffed this pack to the gils with every attachment imaginable and it hasn't burst a seam. Pockets are plentiful and well located. Could be more comfortable, but otherwise a fine, sturdy, reliable pack.
