A pretty good boot overall. Nice stability and waterproofness, however the soles are a little soft for heavy packs and long distances. Also the soles seem to wear down a little too soon for the price of these boots. I have had my pair for 3 years and the leather uppers have stayed in good shape. The inner bootie on mine and my buddies has come unstiched at the heel. Other than this and the soles they are a great boot.

im on my 2nd pair. the 1st were of better quality...definitly. the rubber around the bottom(attached to the leather) repetedly has pulled away from the leather. the inner lining rotted out quickly as well and the sole also has worn out quiker with less use than the former sundowners i had. in addition, theyre not the most comfortable nor supportive, however not the worse on the market. i give my boots the utmost care and i wont be making another purchase of sundowners again..too costly for the low quality... in contrast, im having a pair of boots handmade for me from a german man and his sons out of n,jersey...the waiting list is a few yr, but im repetedly been told by folks who have had his boots for yrs it absolutly worth the wait and the little bit of added expense...until theyre ready...well any suggestions ....

I bought my first pair of these boots quite a few years ago from LL Beans, the quality, fit and function is second to none. Perfect for day-hiking, or light packing. Price is getting up there though.

Just recently bought new sundowners. While in the shop i had the opportunity to try on the made in china pair and the made in italy pair. There is definately a quality/comfort issue with the boots made in china. Beware! Soles are a different material, stitching is sloppy. They put shame on the italan made. Needless to say, I bought the last pair of made in italy boots they had.

I own a pair of Eclipse boots (black sundownwers) and have great luck with them. However, rumor has it that when Vasque moved manufacturing out of Italy, the quality went out the window as well. Mine still read (barely) Made In Italy, which is perhaps why they are going on 3 years and still looking good - no problems whatsoever! Perhaps the others giving low ratings here have purchased non-italian shoes.

Is it just me or does everyone have these boots. Mine are the older model w/o the soft ankle cuff, which isn't bad, just different. I've had some problems with the toe rand coming a little loose.
These are not for people with tender feet. The padding is adequate but not excessive; there are cushier ones out there.
They have good ankle support, and waterproofness too. A better deal if you can find them on sale.

Very comfortable from day one. I wear custom orthotics, and if I move my orthotics from my running shoes to my Vasque boots, it's easy to forget I'm even wearing boots! My break-in time for these boots was essentially zero.

I noticed some people complained about the fit, and I have a friend who simply could not get these boots to fit his feet, even after considerable break-in time. Not really the fault of the boot -- naturally it'll fit some people better than others. Buy it from a good retailer and you'll be OK -- REI took back his Sundowners even though he'd been on several trips and they were clearly worn.

As for me, I won't be returning these!

I bought thes boots in '95 and they have performed very well over the years. I see alot of bad experiences listed in the reviews below, but I haven't had any similar ones - possibly the quality of assembly has not been kept the same over the years. I believe mine were Italian made. Used predominately for day hikes in everything from soft terrain (NJ) to fairly rocky alpine areas (Vail, CO and White Mts., NH). THe leather has worn alot around the toes, but that's expects over time. They are gore-tex, and can be a little warm, but have maintained their waterproofness. Break in was relatively easy and comfortable.

With Superfeet these boots fit me fairly well, so I gave them the ultimate
test: I thru-hiked the Appalachian trail in them!

The first pair I used lasted me 2 1/2
months when the leather began to fail
around the ankles. so I brought them into Blue-ridge outfitters where the were promptly replaced at no charge. The second pair lasted only 2 1/2 weeks!
I had a 3 inch hole where the whimpy
sole opened up! So I sent them home
and made due til a replacement arrived
where I was able to finish the trail in.

In my opinion, these boots were adequate, but the cannot compair
the the construction of the older, Italian made versions. The older uppers
were much more comfortable. My advise
to Vasque is to go back to the old version! And make them with Italian
quality!

Customer Service

Great service, always replaced
defective pairs with no questions asked.
