Well, it doesn't simmer worth a damn. OK, now I've got the bad stuff out of the way. It's cheap, it's light and it BURNS, baby, BURNS! I used it to melt ice chunks for water at 13,000 feet in 40mph winds for a party of 6 when all the other stoves in the group wouldn't stay lit. So I feel like I owe it something. Oh yeah, it's totally field servicable and the parts are readily available.

I do not own this stove but have decent experience in the Smoky Mtns w/ a whisperlite. I would really recommend a Peak one (one piece stove) no- priming-required stove over a whisperlite or other component stove for reasons of: 1)ease of use, you don't have to fiddle w/ fuel connections or wind screens. 2)priming isn't required on the peak ones which is dangerous, I think 3) I think the Peak One is much more stable b/c the inflexible hose doesn’t force one side up. 4) except when you have to pour fuel into the stove, there’s no danger of fuel spills as when you prime or assemble a whisperlite. 5) There are too many parts! I had my experience w/ the stove in the mtns in temperatures in the teens and I discovered the weight of a Peak one is truly worth the convenience when your fingers are numb and you’re hungry. I would never buy a whisperlite or like stove for these reasons. Just think, when you want to use the stove all you do is take the thing out of it’s bag, retrieve matches and light it up. That’s it.

Just like the rest have said, it's a great light weight stove. And if it could simmer, that would be an extra bonus. But, when backpacking, who needs to simmer a gourmet meal. Just boil water and add to your dehydrated meal.

I haven't used the Shaker Jet model but I have the older version which is essentially the same save for the integrated cleaning pin. I have to say that using this stove has been a little tricky. If you're a real beginner then the priming and general operation of this stove could get confusing and sometimes frightning. Managing the pressure level of the fuel bottle and starting the thing up are the hardest parts. Despite having reading impeccable reliability reviews I've had problems with the stove producing low power flames which neither I nor experienced salespersons could figure out. Pretty lightweight and compact. Again, not the easiest stove to use and if you're a real beginner you might want to look at the simpler light and away you go models.

Customer Service

Customer service was very friendly. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with my stove over the phone but gladly offered to take the product in for a modest maintenance fee.

great stove while at high camp on mt. whitney last year i was done eating before most others in our party had boiling water, if used with the wind screen its very frugal with fuel. as for the simmering issue if you know how the stove simmers great, a couple of tricks i've learned is to prime the stove, burn until its hot then shut it off and make sure the flame is completly out, then remove the fuel bottle release all the pressure reconnect the bottle pump 2-3 pumps and relight if you do this quick enough you should not have to reprime and stove simmers great. just be careful. another trick is to take the lid from an msr cookset use it as a defuser plate and take 3 small balls of foil between it and your cooking pot and that makes simmering possible on even the highest flame.dont use rocks they can explode

LOve it! Even without the shaker jet this was a great stove. No frills, not very user friendly, but IT WORKS anywhere, everytime. Many times I have been the first (or only) one in a group to boil water. If you camp a lot and are a bit mechanically inclined, buy this stove (but practice using it before you leave home).

This stove has really exceeded my expectations. With so many products out on the market, and this being a more economical model, I was not sure how well it would perform. Well, I have used this stove quite a few times now, and I can say that it boils water rapidly, seems to be very fuel efficient, is super quick to set up, and packs small and light. When camping this past Jan. up in the Trinity Alps I had left a pot of water full, which had frozen solid overnight. This stove boiled it in about 3 min flat. The only thing I really dont like is the noise, I wish it were a touch more quiet.

I have owned this stove for two years, it has worked well for all my uses. Exteremely light weight and I know I'm not creating lots of garbage with disposible cannisters that other stoves use! I recently purchased a backcountry oven and it works excellent with it.
